How to clean bathroom tiles

Cleaning dirty bathroom tiles can be an annoying problem to deal with, but allowing grime to collect in a humid environment, like a bathroom, can lead to bacteria growth and mould.

Mould can be dangerous for your health, so it is a good idea to keep on top of cleaning. Fortunately, you can clean your bathroom tiles with items you likely already have in your home.

How to clean grout from bathroom tiles

Grout tends to collect a lot of dirt and requires more intensive cleaning than tiles, so you are better off starting with cleaning your grout first.

The three key ingredients you will need to clean bathroom tiles are water, bicarbonate of soda and white vinegar. Start by mixing two parts of bicarbonate of soda with one part water and spread it over the grout.

Scrub the grout with an old toothbrush to try and lift the grime. If stains are particularly stubborn, mix equal parts water and white vinegar, then spray this onto the grout along with the bicarb mixture. Leave this to sit for about half an hour before rinsing. Repeat this process until you are satisfied with the results.

If this doesn’t work, you can use a specialist cleaner like the pink stuff or a chlorine-based bleach. Do not to use bleach on coloured or dark grout though, as it can fade the colour.

If your grout is permanently stained, you can use a grout pen to paint over the grout and restore its original colour.

How to clean bathroom wall tiles

Wall tiles can be cleaned with the same bicarb mixture, with added white vinegar if need be. If you have marble, patterned, or otherwise delicate tiles, gently use a sponge to clean and test clean a small area before tackling the whole wall. Leave the mixture for about fifteen minutes to allow the mixture to work. Rinse and repeat as necessary.

Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive products unless you have a significant amount of dirt and can rely on your tiles not being damaged by rough usage.

How to clean bathroom floor tiles

For floor tiles, sweep the floor to remove any loose debris. Then you can mop with a floor cleaning solution or a mixture of two parts white vinegar and one part dish soap. Lastly, rinse and dry with a soft towel. A steam cleaner also works well on bathroom tiles and can help you get them glistening.

Make sure you keep the windows open when cleaning to avoid inhaling chemicals, and wear gloves so you do not irritate your skin. Maintain your tiles by wiping them down after using the shower or bath and try to properly clean them about every week/fortnight (depending on usage).

We have a range of tiles on display at our showroom in Daventry, including collections from Verona and Marquis.
