How much water does a shower use?
A 10-minute shower or bath uses 160L or more of water and can contribute to a large percentage of your daily water usage. Employing eco-friendly showering habits can make a big difference to your water footprint. Longer showers will also increase your water and energy bills, so reducing your water usage benefits both your wallet and the planet.
Saving water is more important than ever with the current climate crisis, and every measure counts to help the planet. Droughts, agriculture demands, and industry requirements can leave water reservoirs stretched thin, but doing your part makes a big difference.
How much water does a shower use per minute?
The amount of water you use when showering depends on the type of shower you have. Older showers tend to use more water, and a higher water pressure will also increase your water usage. The average shower water usage is about 16l of water every minute, meaning a 5-minute shower can use 75l of water.
Reducing shower water usage
To reduce your water consumption, try upgrading to a low-flow showerhead. These use nearly half the amount of water as a standard one. We recommend the Roca Rainsense or the VitrA Bliss low-flow showerheads.
Alternatively, consider installing a more efficient water heater. You can also attach an aerator to your shower or tap; these mix air into the water stream to reduce water usage without compromising on a luxurious showering experience. Some good aerator taps are the VitrA Origin, Roca Naia. or Bayou Veto
Make sure you keep on top of maintenance for your shower. If you notice a shower or water leak, immediately repair it to reduce needless waste.
Also try to implement good habits, such as taking shorter, less hot showers. Turn on the shower only when you are ready to get in and turn it off when you aren't beneath the water flow, such as when shaving. You can also install a shower timer or smart reader to stay aware of how much water you are using.
If you are more of a bath person, the Roca Contesa and VitrA Balance are both water-saving options which can help you reduce your water consumption.
